About

Hello! My name is Molly Tonkin, and thank you for taking the time to visit my e-portfolio. I am an education student at Thompson Rivers University with a background in English and film, and I grew up in beautiful Kamloops, BC, on the unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc people. I am very thankful every day for the opportunities I have been given, including getting to pursue secondary education at several wonderful schools such as TRU and Simon Fraser University, as well as earning a diploma in Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC.

As a creative person, I hope to be able to instill my teaching career and classroom with plenty of productive and imaginative modes of learning. I enjoy painting and writing in my free time, and I’m never without a book. I have recently taken a dive into a new creative project and have taken up the art of bookbinding, adding that to my artistic repertoire along with other various skills such as sculpting, sewing, and even intricate metal-weaving. I firmly believe that anyone can be creative, and not all creatives are the same. Art is wholly impressionistic and individual—anything can be art! Anything can bring us joy creatively if we simply decide that it does. Author and poet Emily Dickinson once said, “I dwell in possibility”, and this is an undeniable truth. When we set our minds to possibility, we open so many doors for ourselves.

Education is such an over-arching profession. It can be combined with literally anything, and along with my personal artistry, I hope to imbue my teaching with a love of literature and a love of music. I grew up in a small family of four, but between my parents love for classic rock and their desire to treasure our memories, I have been filled with stories. One of my favourite authors, Madeline Miller, once wrote, “I am made of memories”, and this is true for all of us, but this quote resonated with me the first time that I read it, and it has stuck in my mind ever since. As a teacher, I hope to instill my classroom with memories that my students will treasure enough to carry with them into their futures. My own memories of school are good, and I care for them like happy dreams. They make me want to be a good teacher, and an even better person.

I am a strong student and a stronger person, and I place high value on the lessons I have learned that have gotten me this far. My mother gave me perseverance, my father gave me kindness, my sister gave me loyalty, and my friends gave me laughter. My interests gave me wonder, and desire to discover even more and I hope to continue learning for the rest of my life, so that I might be able to pass what I have learned onto others, and leave my mark in their memory, as so many have done for me.

Thank you.
